Build a bicycle project.
Young people just love tinkering with bicycles and anything mechanical and when
given the chance to learn new skills in a non-academic environment, they thrive.
This is a 5 session course in bike maintenance
skills and is aimed at young people, aged 11-19. The project is based around
building a bicycle from the frame to a complete and ready to ride bicycle.
The course offers the opportunity to engage in some meaningful activity and
training and can accommodate a range of learning needs and abilities. It is
particularly suitable for young people who are in education and who are
interested in bicycle maintenance, for those not in education, employment or
training or who, for other reasons, are finding it difficult to be successful
within mainstream educational programmes.
The course is both inspirational and rewarding, and provides an environment
where young people are challenged, motivated and encouraged to reach their
potential. It provides a solid foundation in bike maintenance skills and
provides participants with a positive learning experience that will support both
their personal and vocational development.
The course consists of five 2-hour sessions. Each session is structured with a
focus on practical hands-on learning, with each session linked to associated
learning objectives and outcomes.
Each course will contain a group of up to 14 young people, working in pairs with
two instructors, who have extensive experience in bicycle maintenance as well as
working with young people.
Where appropriate, the course offers the opportunity to work towards credits in
already-established wider key skill qualifications such as ASDAN. We will assist
all participants with supporting evidence. However, a staff member from your
organisation would have to co-ordinate this part of the accreditation process,
due to time constraints.
This is a mobile project whereby we are able to run sessions at an
organisation’s own premises. We will provide all bicycles, tools and stands.
Cost for this course is £1000, plus additional fees for instructor(s) travel
time and out of pocket expenses. This course represents fantastic value for
money, compared to commercial companies. Cost per students works out at just
over £7.00 per hour.
Bike Zone introductory session.
We can also offer organizations a taster session, which helps access demand for
the possible introduction of the build a bike course and provides perspective
students with an educational insight into bicycle maintenance.
The introductory sessions is one and a half hours long, providing a visual
presentation of how to set up a bicycle correctly for both on and off road use,
initial safety checks, an overview of cycling protective clothing and cycle
maintenance kits, information on current cycling issues, future courses and a
Q&A session.
This
is a mobile initiative, whereby we are able to run a taster session at an
organisation’s own premises. We will provide hand outs and visual displays. One
cycling instructor would present the taster session to a maximum of 30 students.
Cost for this taster sessions is £150, plus additional fees for instructor
travel time and out of pocket expenses. This session represents fantastic value
for money, compared to commercial companies. Cost per students works out at
£5.00.
